NY museum galleries refocus gaze on Islamic art

By

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Fifteen renovated galleries offer fresh perspective on the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of more than 12,000 Islamic works of art spanning 13 centuries and an area ranging from Spain to India.
About 1,200 pieces of art will be on view at any one time with displays of textiles and works on paper changing frequently due to the sensitivity of these materials to light.
A re-thinking of the Islamic art collection, developed alongside the museum's years-long renovation project, led to the new galleries being named to reflect the range of nations and empires that produced the art.
While the collection was once succinctly termed Islamic Art, the museum now describes the works inhabiting the galleries as "Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia."
The new emphasis on geography grew out of the view that while religion unifies the collection, region diversifies it.

Hopefully with more museum galleries like these, we get to look up to countries like Islam for their art and culture. What do you think?

It would be nice if the gallery came to L.A. Especially since we are learning about Islamic art in class.

This would be very interesting to view and to learn about the art work of these countries! I imagine the artworks having a richness to them. "Hopefully with more museum galleries like these, we get to look up to countries like Islam for their art and culture" I agree!:) (just one thing, Islam is not a country but a religion :P)

Oh my...I'm sorry! I got carried away. The more art from different countries the better. We learn and appreciate other countries if we see their art. (in my opinion)

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has a very good collection of Islamic art.

This art piece is very beautiful and unique. There are a lot of Islamic art in a lot of museums. This art piece describes the creators by being very precise and clean cut. I would love to see more of these art pieces on here.

Im glad that we are pushing for more art from other countries to be brought over here. It's always interesting to see how other countries art compare and contrast to art that is made over here in the U.S.
