Menil’s Artist Documentation Program Goes Online
Former Menil chief conservator Carol Mancusi-Ungaro began interviewing artists, in the presence of their works of art in 1990, recording their attitudes and feelings toward the works’ conservation and exhibition. The series of videotaped interviews snowballed into the The Menil Collection’s Artist documentation Program, with 33 artists on record. Now, the ADP interview collection is available online on the Menil’s website as the ADP Archive.
The ADP interviews are casual and candid, filmed in the conservation studio, an exhibition gallery, or an artist’s studio, often by award-winning filmmaker and video artist Laurie McDonald, who performed video editing and post-production on the full collection.

I'm watching the Jasper Johns interview as we speak. I know Flag is probably the one most are familiar with but I have to say that Grey Alphabets is my favorite of his.
What a job Carol Mancusi-Ungaro has and what a great idea it was to document these interviews. It's interesting to learn about the different restoration techniques that are being utilized.
The story about Johns cleaning a layer of nicotine off of a painting he had given a friend (she was a smoker) was pretty nasty. Not the act of cleaning itself but the fact that so much had accumulated on there!
Interviews are a great way to capture honest thoughts. Documenting these interviews was a good idea and also very interesting!
Interviewing the artist about their piece is great because sometimes I want to know what a painting or figure means, especially in abstract art. Sometimes I disagree with other people's interpretations about a piece and try to understand the artist's intention. For example, the sculpture of Venus of Wilendorf; I'd like to understand the artist's true intention, but that is not possible...Anyways, this is great for those who seek the deep meaning of an artist's work!
