Marie-Denise Villers

The painting above is one of my favorite works by Marie-Denise Villers in 1801. This painting makes me feel calm whenever I take a close look at it. Her eyes are trying to tell us something about herself. Marie-Denise Villers was born in Paris, in 1774. Her first exibition was made at the Paris Salon in the year 1799 where she received many praises and to this day, still is praised.

I do love this painting. I can see what you mean when you said that her eye are telling us something. Or it's also like someone startled her. She has that almost cat like surprise expression. But yet, the beauty is still evident in her eyes; her face.
I also love the way that the moonlight cascades along the room, illuminating her presence. Her long white dress flowing with the open windows that look out into the moonlight.
I love France. I love French artist. So, I do love this piece as well.
You should take Art 6: Women Artists in History, next semester to learn more about French female Neoclassic painters! You're sure to find even more to love :0)
I really like both of these paintings. The top one seems angelic to me, while the bottom one seems more dark. It could be because one is wearing white while the other is wearing black. It looks like both their faces are staring at something or someone.
I saw this painting at The Met today. Even with all the other paintings hanging around, this one just completely grabbed my attention. It's wonderful :).
